Kuna Indians of San Blas, Panama

This is an example of a Mola made by the Kuna women of Panama
These are the Kuna Indians in San Blas, Panama.

I got the opportunity to meet some people that are members of SUWA (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance). Their names were Brandt and Shirley, they sail the world over and travel everywhere. Brandt was the first Executive Director of SUWA. Brandt and Shirley happened to stop by SUWA and they were telling us about the Kuna Indians of Panama. They had some articles of cloth called "Molas", and apparently the Kuna people sell these to make a living and they take them in their boats and sell them to others on their boats and when then can on land. They were pretty cool and they (Kuna Women) make these by hand. The women are taught to make these, they are all unique and made differently. From what I hear the nicest ones are made by reverse applique, and some others have top stitching on them as well. I will post an article written about how they live below. I found this rather interesting and did a little research myself, as well as checked out their photos they had too. I thought I would share this information as I had never heard of them before. Some of the Kuna Indians speak Spanish, but most of them have no contact with other people so they usually speak their own language that they learn from each other.

This is the article I found.......enjoy

The Kuna Indians are a strongly-knit tribal society living on a chain of islands called San Blas Archipelago, on the Atlantic side of the Republic of Panama. Believed to be decendents of the Caribs, the Kuna Indians still live in much the same manner as their ancestors. The San Blas people have cleverly managed to retain their tribal identity and contentedly lead a moral balanced life, free from the complexities of modern, highly-organized societies.
The Kuna have a matriachal society in which the line of inheritance passes through the women. A young man, after marriage, must live in his mother-in-law's house and work for several years under apprenticeship to his father-in-law. Divorce is uncommon, although it requires no more than the husband to gather his clothes and move out of the house. The daughters of the Kuna people are prized because they will eventually bring additional manpower into the family.
For some unknown reason, there is a high rate of albinism in the Kuna men. Because of the intensity of the sun in Central America, the albino men are not able to do the work expected of a Kuna man. In order to contribute to their community, they assume duties traditionally assigned to the women, including mola-making. Although encouraged not to marry, the albino men are accepted in the community and their work is respected by their peers.
There is a traditional division of labor within the families. The husband gathers coconuts, cultivates the food, provides firewood, repairs the house, makes his and his son's clothes, weaves baskets and carves wooden utensils. The wife prepares the food, collects fresh water from the mainland rivers, unloads the boats, sews female garments, washes the clothes and cleans the house.
The Kuna have a custom for every event and happening in their life and these customs are passed on to their children through dances and chants. These events are also documented in their Molas.
The Kuna language (until recently, unwritten) is spoken throughout the community, however, Spanish is fast becoming the second language. Due to the United States influence since the building of the Panama Canal and with the influx of tourists frequenting the San Blas Archipelago, English is being spoken more and more by the Indians.
The traditional dress of the women in the San Blas is spectacular. The gold nose rings, arm and leg bands of beads, sarongs and the colorful "mola" blouses worn in combination are a work of art in itself. The Kuna men have adopted a clothing style more traditional to the men of the western world and appear drab beside the Kuna women.

The Tooth Fairy

The tooth fairy arrived last night and Sierra was so excited. Sierra has a little pink tooth fairy box with her name on it and a picture of the tooth fairy painted on it. Sierra received $5.00. Wow, now she can hardly wait to see what she can spend it on. I know most of you received a few coins or maybe a dollar when you lost your tooth, however, its 2007 and INFLATION my darling, INFLATION, times have changed haven't they.

Back to School Night 08/23/07

Sierra was very excited for school to start. Midvalley Elementary sent us a letter that said they would be posting the students names and which teacher they would be getting. So all last week Sierra was praying and hoping that she would get Miss Jenkins. So the anticipation was killing her for WEDNESDAY 08/22/07 to come so that she would see who her teacher was. So when Dave got off of work on Wednesday, Sierra made him drive her to the school to see who her teacher was, as they were not posting it until 5pm. Dave drove her there and they went to see who the teacher was, and LO AND BEHOLD, it was Miss Jenkins.
So it was back to school night tonight 08/23/07 and Sierra got to see Miss Jenkins, and her desk, and got a little glimpse of what was expected of them at school, where to line up at, and where to hang their coats and backpacks. Sierra was so excited and she thinks this will be an awesome year too. Miss Jenkins has attended some seminars this summer and has lots of great ideas for this school year. This is Miss Jenkins 2nd year teaching 2nd grade so they will all be learning the ropes along the way. Sierra will start 2nd grade on Monday 08/27/07, so its early to bed and early to rise again, yuck. But I think Sierra is ready for school to start and is excited to do so.

Sierra's 1st Grade Teacher revisited

Sierra got to see her 1st grade teacher again Mrs Mawhinney. Sierra loved having Mrs Mawhinney as her 1st grade teacher. It will be very hard for her to have a new teacher but she looks forward to seeing Mrs Mawhinney around the school and keeping in touch with her. Mrs Mawhinney was an awesome teacher, so hopefully 2nd grade will be just as successful for Sierra. Sierra couldn't have asked for a better teacher for 1st grade.

Sierra Lost Another Tooth

Sierra Lost Another Tooth! That toothfairy is going broke. Sierra lost another tooth, and another is soon on the way. Sierras bottom tooth is now gone, it was loose and she pulled it out, about three days ago. She has another that is about to go too on the bottom, on the right side, so again the toothfairy will be visiting us. I swear the toothfairy might as well move in, she is here so often. Sierra is very excited to see what the toothfairy will bring for her next tooth. Stay tuned to see what she gets. Sierra has a dentist appointment on Sept 13th, I swear at this rate she wont have any teeth for him to look at.

Fireworks at Midvale Harvest Days

We had Midvale Harvest Days this weekend however it wasn't as eventful as it has been in past years, however they did put on a great fireworks show and we got a great parking spot and got in and out rather easily. Plus its great when its close to home and we get out before anyone starts packing their stuff up. Marcy was out of town so we took cousins Joel, and Brienna with us and we packed up the truck again and took our blankets and had a great evening of fireworks under the beautiful stars. The weather was perfect, the skies were clear and we all had a great time once again.

Millcreek Canyon with Friends and Family

Uncle Marty (Junior) and Sierra sitting by the fire
Deb, Sierra and Marty just chillin and taking photos of the sights nearby
Uncle Marty and Sierra trying to get the fire "going" for marshmallow roasting
Sierra scraping off the charcoal holder.

We all got to go to the canyons to have a cookout at the spur of the moment. We decided since I was "off" and free from work that day, that we should have a cookout at Millcreek canyon. So we packed up the truck and headed up there for the evening. We roasted marshmallows and had smores and we cooked up some carne asada as well. It was very delicious and we had some fun, even if it was at the last minute.

High School Musical in the Park

The High School Musical Basketball Team
High School Musical Kids on stage performing

We got to go and see a rendition of High School Musical at the Midvale Park near our home. It was pretty good considering it was some local kids and it was fun to sit at the park and have snow cones and pop corn and lots of other snacks and watch them perform on stage. Here are a few photos of the show. We all had a great time
